A Brief Guide to Hilchos Asarah B'Teves
This Tuesday December 22nd is Asarah B'Teves, one of the 4 minor fasts mentioned in Nach.
On this day, Nevuchadnetzar began his siege of Yerushalayim, which ultimately led to the destruction of the first Beis Hamikdash, may it be rebuilt speedily (in the Selichos said at Shacharis, we also commemorate two other tragedies; the translation of the Torah into Greek, which happened on the Eighth day of Teves, and an unknown tragedy that occurred on the Ninth day of Teves) .
If necessary, teeth may be brushed. It is preferable not to shower in hot water.
Pregnant and nursing women generally do not fast. If someone is seriously ill, he must eat. One who is not feeling well, should consult with the Rav.
Medication may be taken. If one is unable to swallow medication without water, Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach permits swallowing a little water to enable swallowing.
Aneinu is said by Mincha (except for the Shliach Tzibbur who says it by Shacharis as well).
If one forgets Aneinu, he need not repeat Shemonah Esrei.
